EDELGIVE and HURUN INDIA release EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022

(20 October 2022, Mumbai) Hurun India and EdelGive today released the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. This is the 9^th annual ranking of the most generous individuals in India. This is our attempt to highlight India’s remarkable givers and to capture the growing importance of individual givers in India's philanthropic landscape towards nation-building. Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalents from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022. This is the ninth year of the list and it follows on from the Hurun India Rich List, a ranking of 1,103 richest individuals in India, released in September 2022 for the eleventh year.

EdelGive Foundation has partnered with Hurun India towards creating this report to understand philanthropic giving in the country from a data and evidence point of view. The report is not only significant in understanding data of giving but also throws light on the sectors and geographies that are at the receiving end of this giving. Through this report, we aim to bring to notice the strength of the social sector and access areas which require further growth.

This year’s EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 features individuals who have donated INR 5 crore or more during the period under review.

Commenting on the launch, Anas Rahman Junaid, MD and Chief Researcher, Hurun India, said, “EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List aims at chronicling the Indian philanthropy landscape and so far the transformation is encouraging. For instance, over the last 5 years, number of donors who have given more than INR 100 crore have grown from 2 to 15, and over INR 50 crore have grown from 5 to 20. Considering wealth creation potential of India and assuming that the billionaires keep up with philanthropy, I expect these numbers to at least double over the next 5 years.”

For instance, Nikhil and Nithin Kamath and Binny Bansal increased their donations by more than 100% compared to last year. “I am very stoked to see the rise in personal philanthropy in India. Cumulative personal donations grew by 50% to INR 3097 crore, and this constitutes 55% of donation in the list. EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List narrates the modern India’s giving culture through the eyes of the philanthropists.”

“Sustainability as a cause has received accelerated attention last year. For instance, donation towards Environment and Sustainability increased by 46%, to INR 193 crore, compared to last year. I believe that CSR will play a key role in India meeting sustainable development goals (SDG) by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2070.”

With total donations estimated at US$102.4bn, Mumbai-based Jamsetji Tata (1839-1904), was the world’s biggest philanthropist of the last century in the 2021 EdelGive Hurun Philanthropists of the Century, a ranking of the world’s most generous individuals from the past century.”

Top 10 Philanthropists

Contributions towards philanthropy have fallen in FY22 basically due to the huge base effect of pandemic spending and an exceptional contribution of INR 7,807 crore last year by Azim Premji to his two philanthropic trusts.

The Top 10 in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 cumulatively donated INR 3,378 crore in FY22, as against a combined donation of INR 12,785 crore in EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2021.

Couples Susmita & Subroto Bagchi and Radha & NS Parthasarathy debuted in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 with a combined donation of INR 425 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and also entered the TOP 10 and are ranked fifth.

Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini Nilekani are ranked 9th and 11th respectively in the list and are active philanthropists.

Shiv Nadar & family with a donation of INR 1,161 crore tops the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. The founder-chairman of HCL Technologies, Nadar has been very consistent in giving and is only 8% lower than his donations in FY21. The Shiv Nadar Foundation, launched in 1994, pursues the philosophy of 'Creative Philanthropy’. It is a powerful model which envisages the creation of institutions that go beyond the lifetime of its founders and continue to impact future generations for many centuries to come. Nadar has focused its philanthropic efforts mainly on education. The initiatives by the foundation include the SSN Institutions, VidyaGyan, Shiv Nadar University, Shiv Nadar School, Shiksha Initiative, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art. The Foundation has spent US$1.1bn across its initiatives so far.

With a donation of INR 484 crore, Azim Premji & family, are at the second ranking in the list. Contribution towards philanthropy has fallen by 95% year-on-year due to the exceptional share buy-back in 2021. Premji’s two charities have been made partners in three companies that hold his 56% stake in Wipro Ltd, allowing the trusts to receive monetary gains from the shares even as Premji retains the voting rights. The Azim Premji Foundation India Private Limited is perhaps one of the largest endowments in the world valued at US$21bn. The foundation was registered in February 2000 and was to be funded solely by Premji by way of transfer of his personal shares to the Foundation. The primary goal of the Foundation is to contribute to a society that is “a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society” as envisaged in the Constitution of India.

With a donation of INR 411 crore, Mukesh Ambani & family, 65, of Reliance Industries, retains the 3rd spot in EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. He channelizes his charitable activities through Reliance foundation with focus on education and healthcare. Reliance produced 1,000 tonne of oxygen every day during the second wave and provided it free to states for over 1 lakh patients. Besides, it set up 2,000 beds hospital for COVID care. Over 8.5 crore free meals were distributed to frontline workers and vulnerable communities.

Kumar Mangalam Birla & family with a donation of INR 242 crore are ranked fourth in the list. The family has contributed around INR 75 crore in their personal capacity. The Aditya Birla Group works in 7,000 villages, reaching out to 9 million people annually. Globally, the CSR spend of the group exceeds INR 500 crore. The main focus of the group is on healthcare, education, sustainable livelihood, infrastructure, and social reform.

Susmita and Subroto Bagchi, alongside Radha and NS Parthasarathy are jointly ranked in the fifth position in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 with a combined donation of INR 425 crore to the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). The contribution will help the institute to build an 800-bed multi-speciality hospital and a postgraduate medical school. This is the single largest private donation IISc has received. Both Subroto and Parthasarathy are co-founders of Mindtree. In 2021, Subroto gave INR 340 crore to set up cancer and palliative care centre in Bhubaneswar. This 63-year-old philanthropist and his family have also been active contributors to the charity works of Aravind Eye Hospital, Amrita University, and Ahmedabad University. Parthasarathy, a Bengaluru-based entrepreneur, is the managing partner of Mela Ventures and founder director of WhiteSwan Foundation, an NGO focusing on creating awareness of mental health.

With a donation of INR 190 crore, Gautam Adani & family, 60, ranks 7^th on the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Adani Foundation works in Education, Community Health, Sustainable Livelihood, and Community Infrastructure Development in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. The Foundation donated INR 122 crore to support COVID related relief efforts across the country.

With a donation of INR 165 crore, Anil Agarwal & family, 69, is at the 8^th position in the    EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Agarwal has increased his contribution by 27% from last year. The philanthropic arm of India’s leading diversified natural resources conglomerate, Vedanta Limited is celebrating ‘Poshan Maah 2022’ by introducing 75 Poshan recipes for children and women across all Vedanta Nand Ghars. Project Nand Ghar, the flagship initiative of Anil Agarwal Foundation (AAF), strives to strengthen the nutritional portion with these 75 healthy recipes. Nand Ghar began its journey in the year 2015 with the vision to transform the lives of 7 crore children and 2 crore women in the 13.7 lakh Anganwadis in India and are established in partnership with the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development.

With a donation of INR 159 crore, Infosys’s Nandan Nilekani, 67, ranks 9th in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Nilekani is the co-founder and chairperson of EkStep Foundation. He is the co-founder and chairman of Infosys Technologies Limited. The Nilekani’s have signed the ‘Giving Pledge’, which commits half their wealth to philanthropic causes. Nilekani donated INR 36 crore to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) for launching the ‘Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat’ to advance Indian language technology with an aim to create a social impact.

Larsen & Toubro’s Group executive chairman AM Naik is ranked 10^th with a donation of INR 142 crore in FY22. He has demonstrated that philanthropy is more than writing out a cheque and is intensely outcome-oriented and based on a professional approach to the act of giving. Naik’s philanthropy, carried out exclusively in his personal capacity, is sharply focused on three segments – healthcare, education, and skill-building. Most activities are carried out by the two trusts that he set up in 2010 – the Nirali Memorial Medical Trust and the A M Naik Charitable Trust.

Personal philanthropy gaining traction over the years

26 individuals in EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 have donated INR 5 crore or more in their personal capacity compared to 38 individuals last year.

Some of the notable private philanthropists who donated beyond the mandatory CSR spend.

Shiv Nadar & family tops the list of individuals and family who have contributed the most in their individual capacity. The Nadar’s have gone beyond the mandatory CSR contribution and have given to INR 1,043 crore to the causes they believe in their personal capacity. Nadar, founder of the HCL Group, has given close to US$1bn in total to philanthropic causes through the Shiv Nadar Foundation, with a focus on transformative education to drive social change. Roshni Nadar Malhotra has become a leading figure in the world of tech and in philanthropy. She succeeded her father at the helm of HCL Technologies Limited in 2020. A passionate environmentalist, Malhotra is also the founder of The Habitats Trust, a coalition supporting work to sustain lesser-known endangered species and habitats, and is a trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation. Additionally, she is the chairperson of VidyaGyan Leadership Academy, a pair of free schools in rural Uttar Pradesh focused.

Susmita and Subroto Bagchi, alongside Radha and NS Parthasarathy debuted in the list with their personal and combined contribution of INR 425 crore for a very noble cause. The Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital will be built within the existing IISc Bengaluru campus, taking full advantage of the co-location with the science and engineering faculties and labs. The impact of the IISc Medical School and Bagchi-Parthasarathy Hospital would go beyond science and solutions. It is also expected to set the tone for sustainable health goals and policies for the nation, and serve as a model of clinical research and training that can be emulated nationwide. This ambitious endeavour will be a game- changer in addressing the future healthcare needs of the country.

Nithin and Nikhil Kamath, co-founders of online brokerage Zerodha, have contributed INR 100 crore in their personal capacity. Both are passionate about causes like climate change solutions and livelihoods. The Kamath brothers’ have committed US$100mn to Rainmatter Foundation, which will work to support grassroots individuals, organisations, and companies working on solutions for climate change. Special focus will be on afforestation, ecological restoration and livelihoods.

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan has given INR 90 crore in FY22 in his personal capacity. Kris is passionate about computation, education and entrepreneurship. He had set up, with his wife Sudha Gopalakrishnan, the Pratiksha Trust to fund his ideas. In 2014, the trust announced a grant of INR 225 crore for the Centre for Brain Research (CBR), to be set up inside the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus in Bengaluru. Kris also supports the nurturing of livelihoods of farmers through programs like the Naandi Foundation and Centre for Collective Development.

Rohini Nilekani is perhaps the most generous lady in India and has been a consistent contributor to philanthropy for several years. She has contributed INR 120 crore in her personal capacity.

New to this year

19 philanthropists debuted in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. Susmita and Subroto Bagchi, alongside Radha and NS Parthasarathy debuted in the list with their personal and combined contribution of INR 425 crore to set up an 800-bed hospital.

Ajit Isaac, chairman of Quess Corp, is ranked third in the new entrants list in the EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022 with a donation of INR 115 crore. He actively involves himself in giving back to society. He played an active part in setting up the Careworks Foundation, which empowers over 14,800 students in 61 schools. He recently signed an MoU with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru to donate INR 105 crore for setting up a Centre for Public Health and Policy Research.

Rakesh Gangwal, co-promoter of InterGlobe Aviation is ranked fourth after he made a INR 100 crore personal donation to the School of Medical Sciences & Technology at IIT, Kanpur. Gangwal is an alumni.

With a donation of INR 26 crore to disaster relief, Ashok Soota of Happiest Minds Technologies debuted in the list. Soota, who branched out of Mindtree on his own to start Happiest Minds in 2011, is involved in philanthropy through Samarthanam, a trust for the disabled and Ashirvadam, a non-profit that focuses on providing needy in education and medical support. He has also announced a commitment of INR 200 crore for SKAN, probably India’s first not-for-profit entity in the private sector, exclusively for medical research.

Govind Dholakia of Shree Ramkrishna Exports is also featured for the first time in the list with his donation of INR 15 crore towards disaster relief. In 1970, Dholakia founded Shree Ram Krishna Exports (SRK), world’s largest diamond crafting and exports company and SRK Knowledge Foundation (SRKKF), a philanthropic arm of SRK in 2014. He is associated with over 30 educational, medical and social trusts in various capacities.

Change in Allocation

Nithin Kamath & Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha with a 308% year-on-year increase in philanthropic donations lead the list of individuals who have increased their contributions (in percentage terms) to social causes. The brothers have pledged a quarter of their wealth to philanthropy and have plans to give back INR 750 crore over the next three years.

Prithavi Raj Jindal & family of JSW Steel have donated 231% more in FY22 when compared to the previous fiscal. The Foundation’s focus areas are Education, Health & Nutrition, Skill Development, Rural BPO, Environment & Water, Sports, and Art & Heritage. Through a strong field presence, it operates across 22 rural locations in 11 Indian States with priority on communities around JSW’s plant & port locations.

Binny Bansal, co-founder of Flipkart is ranked third in this classification with a 174% increase in his allocation to social causes. Bansal has given INR 37 crore in FY22 and his primary cause is education.

Nithin Kamath & Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha also lead the list of individuals who have increased their philanthropy donations in absolute terms, with INR 76 crore in one year taking the total donations in FY22 to INR 100 crore.

India’s richest man Gautam Adani increased his donations by INR 60 crore in FY22 to a total of INR 190 crore and is ranked second in this classification.

Vaccine king Cyrus S Poonawalla & Adar Poonawalla are ranked third with an increase of INR 54 crore above their contribution in the past year. Poonawalla’s made a donation of INR 112 crore in FY22 and their primary cause of philanthropy is education.

Women in the list

6 women find their place in EdelGive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2022. With a donation of INR 120 crore, Rohini Nilekani of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies is India’s most generous woman, followed Leena Gandhi Tewari of USV who donated INR 21 crore. Anu Aga & family of Thermax donated INR 20 crore in FY22 to come in the third spot.

Rohini Nilekani is ranked overall at the eleventh position with a personal contribution of INR 120 crore. Wife of Nandan Nilekani, Rohini is a committed philanthropist and she, together with her husband Nandan signed the Giving Pledge, which commits half their wealth to philanthropic causes. She is the chairperson of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies and co-founder and director of EkStep, a non-profit education platform. Rohini is also the founder and former chairperson of Arghyam, a foundation she set up in 2001 for sustainable water and sanitation, which funds initiatives across India.

Leena Gandhi Tewari of pharma company USV is ranked second with a donation of INR 21 crore. Leena set up the Dr Susheela Gandhi Centre for Social Development in Vakola for supporting underprivileged women. The center supports the education and learning of girls by mentoring them through academic instruction, dance, and computers. She has also authored her grandfather’s autobiography - Beyond Pipes and Dreams.

Anu Aga & Family with a donation of INR 20 crore is in the third position of women who have donated the most for social causes. Anu retired as chairperson of Thermax in October 2004 and is the founder chairperson Thermax Foundation, the non-profit CSR wing of Thermax focussing primarily on offering children from economically underprivileged backgrounds a level playing field through quality education, so that they are able to make choices in life and lift themselves out of poverty.

Most preferred Philanthropic Cause – 2022

With 20.2% of donations, Education remains the most favoured philanthropic cause, followed by Health Care 18.7% and Arts, Culture & Heritage receiving 11.1%.

With 36 individuals, Mumbai is the philanthropy capital of India, followed by New Delhi and Bengaluru. Indian corporates prefer to donate on a Pan-India basis instead of limiting their focus to HQ locations.

CSR spending of BSE 200 companies growing at a CAGR of 15% during the last six years

Government, Civil Society, and the Corporate are the three distinct pillars sustaining the nation-building process. Corporate Social Responsibility is moving away from cheque book charity donations to a more long-term strategic engagement. The cumulative CSR spend of BSE 200 companies has grown from INR 5,561 crore FY15 to INR 12,122 crore in FY22.

Unspent CSR

The proportion of unspent capital has been on the decline since FY15. The shortfall in spending was 5% of the total spend or INR 628 crore in FY21. The gap stood at 30% in FY15.

BSE 200: Sectors donating most towards corporate CSR

With INR 2,329 crore CSR spend Oil & Gas leads followed by Software & Services with INR 1,671 crore and Banks with INR 1,455 crore.
